Nutley Conservation Group

Nutley Conservation Group was set up in 2004 when it was felt that there was a need for Nutley residents to be more closely involved in local plans and the future design and development of their village. The Group operates proactively in trying to shape the evolution of the village by influencing local council and district plans before they are finalised. It also responds to planning applications and other development issues as they arise.  You can read our constitution by clicking here. The aims of the group are:

  • • To promote the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment of Nutley and the surrounding area.

  • • To generate interest in proposed developments so they can be discussed and views expressed before decisions are taken

Examples of Projects

Village Design Statement – In Spring 2007 we completed an ambitious project to produce a Village Design Statement booklet with the objective of encouraging sensitive planning and development in response to the village’s needs, whilst enhancing the character of the village in the future. This required the commitment and efforts of very many people, wide consultation and close liaison with the Parish and District Councils.

Local Development Framework – In Summer 2007 we provided a lengthy and detailed response to Wealden’s Local Development Framework Issues and Options Consultation document - you can read this by clicking here. This should encourage the District Council to reassess the classification criteria that they have used for Nutley to reduce and additionally influence the major planning proposals they need to meet Government targets.

Transition Village – In Autumn 2007 we held a number of events to look at the pressing issues raised by the environment, climate change and our over-reliance on cheap oil. We asked whether the village was ready to assess the ways it could take its role in becoming sustainable a little further.

Mobile Masts – we have supported local resident groups in their own campaigns against a number of inappropriate mobile phone mast applications, most recently that by O2 at Tyelands Farm.

Development proposals -We have campaigned successfully against the proposals to build a number of log cabins in the grounds of the Nutley Arms and encouraged the Council to put strong caveats on its proposal for eleven bed and breakfast rooms. From the outset the Committee’s objective was to preserve the amenity of a pub for the village but at the same time to avoid obtrusive over-development of the site.

Primary Care Trusts –We have written official responses to both the Public Consultation Document ‘Creating an NHS fit for the future’ produced by Hastings and Rother Primary Care Trust and East Sussex Downs & Weald Primary Care Trust ( you can read this by clicking here) as well as that for Mid Sussex concerning the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath - Click here to read the response.

Ashdown Forest Strategic Plan – We’ve provided a response to the Conservators of Ashdown Forest’s Strategic Forest Plan. You can read the full response from the NCG by clicking here.

East Grinstead Relief Road –We have worked with East Sussex County Council, Conservators of Ashdown Forest and Forest Row residents to campaign against Mid Sussex District Council’s proposal for a 2,500 residential development and a relief road that exits onto the A22 just north of Forest Row. This would have a significant traffic impact on Nutley and we have lodged numerous letters of objection and an official response to the MSDC public consultation. You can read our response here.
